"NOT essential...but close!" by Turrican C64, from Wolverhampton, England - 24 April 2006

Overall Rating:5 out of 5Recommended

Congratulations to Microsoft for producing a well designed, comfortable and -most importantly- functional gamepad, one I heartily recommend. I've found the pad's buttons and analogue triggers & sticks to be very smooth and responsive and, whilst I think the 'Start' and 'Back' buttons are maybe just a fraction too close to the central 'X' button, it doesn't cause too many problems in fairness; certainly not for me. The D-pad performs fine and as would be expected, but then this feature HAS been around for years and is hardly new technology, I suppose... As for the freedom wireless connectivity gives the gamer, well it gets a massive thumbs-up from me. Rest assured there's absolutely no lag or delay on-screen. Comfortably snug in the hand, this controller feels quite light even with the 'Plug & Play' rechargeable battery fitted. In fact, I think it's only sensible to point out that, if you're thinking of purchasing this excellent pad, you would do well to go the whole hog and buy the Plug & Play kit, too. Well worth the extra moolah! Other nice touches? Definitely the rubberised finish to the analogue sticks which gives a nice, positive thumb-grip. Also, it's nice to see the original Xbox's black & white buttons being replaced by the far more sensible shoulder buttons: overdue but welcome! So, summing up: On the positive side, here we have a very functional, responsive, WIRELESS pad.....whereas on the negative side, it's just a question of whether YOU think the pad's worth the extra cash it'll cost when compared to the wired Xbox 360 variety. Personally speaking, I think it is, but ONLY if you intend to buy the recharger kit, because this baby(if the rumble function's on) flattens even Duracell batteries within hours, trust me. However, with the kit, it's a sheer pleasure to use. Top stuff, Microsoft....I award you a merited, 5-star rating.

5 out of 5  "Best controller ever..." - 17 December 2005
Superiro to the S-type, and just beats the dualshock 2 on PS2. Absolute perfection in design, look, and feel. The wireless response is instant and goes through several average sized rooms, with obstacles in the way easily. Best controler i've ever used, and that's a lot. Make sure you get a play and charge kit, or get some AA batteries, as they last around a week of average gaming hours.

4 out of 5  "Xbox 360's Wireless Controller" - 6 January 2006
This controller suits my needs perfectly. I understand that some people have a gripe about it being smaller, however i have large hands and have had no trouble with this pad. It is noticably smaller and slimmer than the previous xbox's designs, including the 'S pad'. The buttons are better quality than before; they are more comfortable and move in and out easier, causing less finger dinting , even in long sessions of gaming. They are also set out in a better manner, the stupidly placed black and white buttons being replaced by the favourable 'bumpers'(essentially R1 and L1, digital buttons placed above the triggers). The batteries last for a reasonable amount of time, even when the headset is connected for long periods. There is no 'lag' or delay in between pressing buttons and the action being registered, as there was with third party wireless controlls for the original xbox. The only downfall is the price, especially seen as multiplayer wireless gaming is so good. It costs around £30 for a controller, which should reduce as time goes on, but for a full on 4 player sesh, this costs up to £120 if you replace the core edition's wired pad. Overall a neat piece of kit, if a little pricey. Works very well and looks and feels great. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5  "Very very comfortable" - 3 January 2006
After using all of the first party contollers for the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube for a reasonable amount of time, I must say this is a real step-up for Microsoft.

The original Xbox controller was huge! Some people found it unconfortable, but I preferred it over the controller-s as the larger size made it more managable. With the 360's controller being even smaller, I was a little worried, but it's ergonomics are perfect (for me at least). Many hours of racing or FPS action will not leave you with aching fingers or thumbs. The triggers are sharp and precise, as are the analogue sticks. The face buttons are tactile and well placed while the bumpers (the sholder buttons that replaced the black and white buttons) are also very good. They are not designed to be used at the same time as the triggers, as games designers have realised, but holding a bumber button and its opposite trigger (LT/RB or RT/LB) is fine.

The center buttons are well placed as well, I have no trouble locating any of them without looking at the pad. My only niggle would be with the d-pad. While this is not a well used feature on modern games, it ca be a little difficult to tell if you've pressed the right direction some of the time. This is particularly evident while playing Perfect Dark Zero and trying to use the gadgets.

The wireless is awesome! Instant response and excellent range with a very good battery life. If you can get hold of some rechargable AA's and a charger, it's probably not worth the play and charge kit though. I've yet to run down the batteries yet, so I'm sticking with my AAs.

Don't jude the controller on any experiences you may have had ona shop display cabinet, the controller is far nicer to hold when it's free in your hand!

All in all, this controller verges on perfect. Well worth the extra money for the easy to use wireless as well.

5 out of 5  "SLICK" - 5 February 2006
Very cool, saves alot of mess from cables, which i always used to trip up over on the old xbox. They only use 2 batteries, and i got mine with the xbox, aswell as pgr3 and a hardrive, as i have a core, so the controller included batteries which is handy. They have an extremely long life, i reccomend energiser as it has more power and uses less at a time, making it last ages! It is slick, stylish, comftorble and makes the old small controller for xbox seem humungous. Buy one (or 2,3,4) now.
You won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5  "The best first party controller currently on the market?" - 6 May 2006
If you found the original Xbox controller bulky then there can be no doubt that Microsoft have solved that problem. This new design is sleek, asthetically pleasing and very comfortable. The fact that the white and black buttons have been changed to bumper buttons near the triggers is also a nice change.

The batteries included with the console have lasted a long time and the wireless aspect is perfect. The Xbox guide button is also a lazy man's dream as you can use it to turn the console on and off, as well as access your Xbox live account and hard drive saves through an accessible and intuitive interface. As long as the game your playing is in the console why go through the trouble of getting up to play your console?

The short of it is; this controller may well be the best first party effort I've used. Which is saying something, because I personally really liked the Gamecube controller as well. The only downside is, as with all wireless things, the batteries will die on you sooner or later but the energizer batteries seem to last really well and at the end of the day, the wireless freedom and sound design more than makes battery swapping worthwhile.

5 out of 5  "Good all rounder." - 12 May 2007
The new xbox controllers are improved over the previous controller. The sticks on the controller for a start are more precise and feel more hard waring. The battery life is good u should get a good 25 hours out of them and u can switch the console on and off from the controller too which is a great added bonus of the new controllers.

5 out of 5  "4 kin brilliant" - 7 July 2007
I used to be a strict playstation fan and hated my mates xbox controller.
When the ps3 was released i decieded to turn to the dark side and get an xbox 360 due to the ps3's ridiculous price. It only took me a couple of days to get used to the xbox controller and now i couldnt go back.

The wireless feature is superb. If you are a slob like me and you play your games when your in bed its great. When my eyes are just starting to open after a good nights sleep and my first coherent thought of the day is to switch on the console i rummage around under the covers(no!... not that) and find the controller from last nights gaming and press the big round button which fires up the console, within a minute your game has probably loaded up and your off just as your blinking the last of the sleep from your eyes.

The wireless signal is great with no interruptions. The battery normaly lasts me 2 weeks, at which point the little lights on the controller start warning you that power is low, it can do this for around a day, then when i go to sleep or go out i put it on charge with a charge and play kit. Within a few hours the battery is at full again.

My wired ps2 cont' used to irritate me loads with the wire getting trapped on the duvet etc

5 out of 5  "Best controller" - 23 August 2007
This is easily the best controller. i've used N64, Playstation (all of them cos their the same control, sort your life out Sony!) Gamecube, Xbox, Wii and none of them are like this. It's built solid, feels sturdy and the buttons are where you want them to be. Being previous Xbox owner, i was a bit cheesed that black & white are now buffers but once i started playing a game i didnt really care. the reason i like this control is course it feels as though it won't break like previous controls have done in the past. and when Wii or PS3 fanboys say 'but it hasn't got motion sensors', so what? the 360 it's that type of console (neithers the PS3 really but hey how). but what the control does have over the PS3 is rumble. I have no idea what it must feel like without rumble now, whats it like PS3 fanboys? this control also fits nicely into your hand. i have normal sized hands so it doesn't make a different, but one of my friends has big hands and he finds the control fine to use, has no problems with it at all.

So if you've brought yourself a core 360, them you need one of these bad boys. if you brought a premium like me, you need another one, and if you brought an elite tehn get yourself a black one.

5 out of 5  "It's great!" - 22 August 2007
It's simple........if you have to play with a wireless control pad, and have the ability to relax in an arm chair without wires knocking over your cup of tea...then your already willing to pay to have this control pad. Yes you have to pay for extra accessories if you want to charge and play or charge fast, but thats far far better than buying a lifetime supply of AA batteries would you not agree?

Some people would moan that it's very expensive to play wirelessly, and that they don't want to play a game from their friends house four doors away.....but ask yourself, why did they buy the wireless control pad in the first place?

If you prefer to play it cheaper and you can sit within a couple of metres of your console.....get a pad with wires, you'll be fine.

This is great for what it does, and it's a very small cost when compared to how much those batteries will cost

5 out of 5  "The best controller by far." - 3 August 2007
All the other people have said it all, but just so everyone knows, the Xbox controller is so well layed out and designed that the U.S. military are using it to control some of their mine removal robots in experimental operations.
Imagine them doing THAT with a Wiimote.
