Editorial: Live is an online multiplayer gaming and content delivery system that allows registered users to create their own friends list of other users, and communicate with them via a mail-like system of either text or voice messages which can even be used to send a message to an offline user. With the new Xbox Live Vision camera, users can also send snapshot images to offline friends or video conference with them when theyre online. With the launch of the Xbox 360, Xbox Live went through a major change. The most notable change is the establishment of two subscription types, called Silver and Gold. Xbox Live Silver is free to all Xbox 360 owners. While it does not allow access to online play, it still has access to other Xbox Live features such as the friends list, messages, and the Xbox Live Marketplace. Xbox Live Gold, which requires a monthly or yearly subscription fee, allows users to access all available features on Xbox Live. Although there are no parental controls available in Xbox Live any reports of misuse of the service for criminal or sexual purposes results in a permanent ban of the account.Key Features:Xbox Live has a number of great community-focused features and benefits such as:Gamertags - for user identificationAvatars - gamer pictures for association with gamer tagsMottos - for display on gamer profilesGamer zones - which represents your gaming style and influences player matchmaking (Recreation, Pro, Family, Underground)Game achievements - shows how well you and your friends are doing in a gameReputation rating - voted on by other players who decide to either prefer or avoid another playerGamerscores - a total of a player's achievement pointsFriends list - a list of a player's chosen friendsRecent player list - lists the last 50 players one user has played withXbox Live Marketplace content - download demos, trailers, new and retro gamesMultiplayer online gameplay - play against other gamers across the globeEnhanced m

"Worth every penny" - 28 May 2008
Gives you so much more than just the single player games. Lets you keep in contact with mates and great to communicate whilst playing a game. Worth the money, especially now with the extra chapters on GTA IV available only to Xbox live subscribers!

"Essential" - 16 February 2006
Xbox live is probably one of the best things about owning an Xbox 360. The system is so effective that I'd have been happy even if the visual capabilities of the console weren't so good.So what's so great about Live then? Well, for anyone who's played PC games online, you'll know that you have to create an account for every single one of them, which can be confusing if nothing else. Xbox live allows you to create one account, linked to your hotmail account if you so wish, allowing you to play any compatible game online without having to register every time. Aside from this, Live now allows you to download playable demo's, video's and pictures to your Xbox 360's hard drive. There is also a new thing called "Xbox Live Arcade". This is where you can play some 80's classics and a range of puzzle games. Live also has a few neat touches that round off the whole experience. You can now have a Gamercard. This is where you can show off how many achievements you've unlocked and how good your online reputation is. Its only a small thing, but it makes a neat package even better. The Membership card for sale here allows you access to the Online gaming element of Live (the rest is free). If you have Project Gotham 3 or Dead or Alive 4, it is essential. At £32 it works out at £2.60 per month, which is fantastic value for money. If you want to play against other people from around the world, there is no better system.

"What are you waiting for?" - 14 September 2007
Live is brilliant, its outstanding, play games, download tv & movies (not uk yet), download demos, arcade games, meet up with mates and get extra game content. Sure you need points to buy some content but our games are free (excluding this) and demos are free too.

"Quite simply the best." - 29 June 2007
Others may moan about having to pay for this but you for 9p a day its a bargain compared to the amount of fun you can have with all its features compared to the rather featureless online system sony has.
The reviewer below seems to think that setting up an online gaming network costs about a fiver and that MS is just using this as a ploy to get mega rich, this is not the case.
The amount of effort put in and costs for things such as bandwidth means it can be an expensive business, sure Sony's online network is free but you have no where near the amount of features and some games dont even have online play as Sony make the games developer pay for all tools and costs whereas for Live microsoft does it all for them, remember you get what you pay for!
Another great thing is that you can have all the features such as downloading trailers/demos and still chat to friends for free.
You only have to pay for playing online which is rather good because you hardly get any idiots like you did on the PS2 games who would setup multiple profiles and go team killing an entire game, if they tried this on Live they would get their account banned and would have to pay for a new one which I'm guessing they wouldnt be bothered to do for the sake of team killing unless they are very rich.
It would be nice to know if this is still dominant on Sonys network as you are still able to setup as many accounts as you like and use them to annoy other players, which frankly I would pay the fee alone for just to get rid of them.

"Xbox Live on a Whole.." - 4 August 2007
When you ask someone what the best feature is about having an xbox, they would (if they had it) probably say xbox live. If you asked me, thats just the answer your would get. xbox live enables you to download things from the xbox live marketplace such as demo's, game trailers and gamer pictures. However a downfall to this is that some of the material requires microsoft points to download, an obvious source of money for microsoft, but worth it if you want the stuff. You can also access the xbox live arcade which includes many classic favourites such as frogger and joust to keep you amused for a long while, however most if not all of these require points, but they do have free trial versions.
It also enables online play with others around the world, mainly americans, on your favourite games of your choice. All xbox 360 games have xbox live enabled, wether it is for leaderboards like on dead rising or for all-action shooting fun like on games such as rainbow 6 vegas.
This is just in my case, but i have since mostly neglected single player mode on most of my games to go online with the FPS ones. But this wont apply to everyone!
You have to get this, it should be a crime not to!

"XBOX LIVE" - 1 April 2007
hi, xbox live is the coolest thing that ever came to gaming. yo have not experienced 99.9% of a game if you haven't got this. you think you're good, test your skills against anyone else in the world, speak to them and even see them with a vision camera. on rainbow six you can map your own face on the police offficer so that your shooting up those terrorists. requires video camera. you can download demos from the xbox live marketplace for FREE and also download famous arcade games such as Pacman/worms/uno etc. also trailers of games are availible and more gamer pictures and themes for your dashboard. or if you're into music you can download music videos. this suits everything. to find out if your games are compatible with xbox live look at the top of the cover and it should say xbox live", this is mst games. you can also send messages and create friends lists. gamescore is unlockable. for one year 35 pounds is excellent. that's less than 3 pound a month and you'll be playing on it alot. you won't regret it, meet you on there. thanks.

"Just get it, simple as that!" - 9 January 2007
I can't say much more then the title, I do not see the point in this modern age of having such a powerful console, whithout connecting it to the world. OK I accept that you can have the silver membership however it is a machine designed to be played with other people, and I haven't come accross a single game yet that doesn't have some element of live content. My trial membership ran out after 30 days and I have missed it, I am addicted to UNO on the arcade and have missed being able to play with REAL people.
The bootom live is that if you want to fulfil everything that the 360 was made for, get Xbox Live Gold and connect it to a Media Center PC.

"Just buy it..." - 1 August 2007
Its simple... xbox live is a must in the modern day of gaming. Single player is merely something to train yourself up to play real people online. As advance as AI could ever get , it doesnt compare to playing real people. The xbox live community is the best, you get the odd idiot who takes his games life or death serious and calls everyone a noob... but these are few and far between and you kinda pity them... but everyone else is one for the same reason as you... they just wanna, race you, punch you, shoot you or play footy with you... its more fun then your could ever image... alaong wiht the headset its a blast.
Its the most simple thing to use, the xbox centre button being the heart ot the console, it provides detail on frieds, where they are, what game there on, when they were last on, you can invite for private chats, or jump straight into there game. Its so simple and easy to use!!
The gamertag and gamerscore ability allows you to create your own gaming persona.... with most points being awarded 100% online, so if you want to up your score, live is a nessecity!!
Marketplace lets you download, demos, movies, gamer picutres, trailers, old skool games via xbox live arcade!!
Dont moan about the fact that you have to pay for it, it works out at 10p a day....honestly what on earth are you going to do with 10p a day... i will get xbox live and have a blast, you can sit at home with your 10 penny chews and see who gets more out of there money! Think of it like this, the money goes back into xbox, so it goes towards making great games that are online.... nearly all xbox titles are online, and without the charge it would not be possible.... hence ps3 having only a select amount online.
You can go get a ps3 and have the free home system, where you can make your own house and your own game character who you can dress like you, and walk around your imaginary house, and have other peoples computer character to come over and pretend to hang about your pretend house like you were really there...if like me.... you HAVE a life..... get a 360 and get live!!!
