5 out of 5  "360 owners take note!" - 18 December 2005
If you have an xbox 360 you may be interested to know that the game actually runs better on the original xbox, not sure why but the frame rate really slows down when you encounter an enemy, it's not jerky but it results in a slow motion type effect that really spolis the combat. As for the game itself it's hard as nails and you will want to break your pad in anger but stick with it and there is a real sense of achievement when you get to the end. I've played both Black and the regular game and the extra content is nice but not really worth the money if you have the original.

5 out of 5  "The best action game on XBox" - 22 October 2005
Many things have been packaged as XBox classics, but few really live up to the "classic" designation. This is an exception. It's hard to nail exactly why. The fluid movement; the combat system which is sophisticated, easy to pick up, but hard to master; the creativity apparent in the design of the monsters and fiends; the length and depth of the gameplay, are all important. However if I had to pick one thing, I'd say it's the attention to detail. Every hair is in place; every scene is carefully designed. There's plenty of excitement as well - battles which are touch and go until the last moment.

Seasoned Ninja warriors will want to know if Black is worth it for owners of the first XBox release. It is still fundamentally the same game as before. However, this is a game which has been gradually perfected by its designers. Earlier updates came via XBox live in the form of "Hurricane Packs", with new monsters, new weapons, and an enhanced combat system. This release is in effect Hurricane Pack 4, integrating the previous updates and adding some more of its own. If you didn't like the game before, you won't like it now. If you liked the game, but don't have XBox Live, this upgrade is definitely worth it. If you are an NG addict, and played both the original and the HP updates, then Black is still worth it because you will appreciate every detail of the new package.

If you calculate the value of a game by the hours of enjoyment you get from it, this has to be the best XBox bargain available.

5 out of 5  "not for the faint of heart" - 13 March 2006
There have been more than enough reviews for this game, but I couldn't resist chipping in. Its taken me nigh on three weeks to grind my way through the story mode, and I have to say I agree with earlier comments regarding the learning curve and dodgy camera. But despite that there is no doubt that this is a quality piece of work, as a budget buy it doesn't get any better. The developers have come up with something which despite the obvious challenge keeps you hooked throughout. If you get frustrated easily I wouldn't bother, but with a bit of patience you can make progress. This isn't your regular hack'n'slash, it takes timing and a good knowledge of the vast array of moves to become fluent with the main character. But trust me, the goodies are worth the pain.

5 out of 5  "Sheer brilliance!" - 10 November 2006
Ninja Gaiden Black was the first video game in a very long time to have shocked me with just how good it is. Playing it on my Xbox360, I couldn't help but be surprised with the fact that it was only an Xbox game!

This whole game can be described as beautiful, fluid action that almost feels like you are dancing instead of fighting. No simple repetitions of a "fighting" animation, nearly every time you attack something it seems to be with a different animation and it never gets repetitive.

I'm looking forward to playing through this game again. Definately one of the best, if not THE best, game on the Xbox system.

5 out of 5  "best action game of Xbox!" - 19 January 2008
this game totally shocked me at the level of detail in the design, audio and combat in the game! i immediately fell in love with it!

this, for me, is the best action/adventure game on the original Xbox! its just perfect although the camera system needed more tweaking.

what makes it even more perfect is that the Hurricane Packs have been integrated into it which just tops it off!

hopefully Ninja Gaiden 2 will succeed over Ninja Gaiden!

5 out of 5  "Downloadable through Xbox 360 for cheaper" - 12 February 2008
Just wanted to let others know that starting yesterday you can buy Ninja Gaiden Black through the Xbox Original section on the Xbox marketplace now for £10 (1200 points).
So if you dont fancy paying silly money like £20+ for a used copy then you can just download it and have a copy permanently on your hard disk so you can load it up right away.
You can also delete it if you need the space on the hard drive and then freely re-download it as many times as you want.

5 out of 5  "The Gold Standard" - 16 February 2008
If you want to prove yourself as an amazingly fit human being, you run marathons. For intelligence, you join MENSA, or maybe take to particle physics. In the gaming world, the equivalent to these is Ninja Gaiden.

Yes, Gaiden is a very, very difficult game. It is also the gold standard of action adventure gaming, along with the re-imagined Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cries 1 and 4. Superb and fluid player character movement, believable enemy A.I., along with top-daw graphical rendering and sound make Ninja Gaiden a game not to just play, but to dedicate oneself to.

The XBOX version is if anything tougher than its PS3 rehash Sigma, seeing as the original springs more enemies at you and makes their attacks even more unforgiving. Essential...if you have the patience.

4 out of 5  "Ninja Gaiden returns in Black" - 10 March 2006
when ninja gaiden first arrived on xbox it showed the world the xbox's capibilities it really pushed the machine to its limits.
now it returns but not im afraid to say as a sequel. its the same game but this time with more, lots more and its harder then ever before, (can ninja gaiden get any more difficult?).
unfortunately to unlock the newest missions you must do the impossible and complete Black on the hardest difficulty. tecmo have also kindly thrown in a few new costumes but this is definitely a game for the new or the hardcore fans

5 out of 5  "Hard, Fun And Long" - 15 December 2005
This game is not for the casual gamer as it will simple frustrate them into smashing their Xbox controller (If their the type who smashes controllers)

The Game consists of 16 levels each difficult in there own way and each sets new challenges. The story is not as bad as many reviews claim, to be fair its noting new or partially exciting but it beats the lame attempt in Halo 2.

This is probably one of the best games on Xbox and could easy waited and moved on to the next gen. The skills the ninja team learned while making beat em up has served them well, an awesome amount of combos makes this a real laster.

Speaking of the update there isn't much in the main game apart from the new lower difficult obtained by dieing three times in the first two missions. The mission mode that is only playable once the main game is completed (This is fair as this mode is even more difficult than the main game) there is more fighting than any player could hope to have for under £20
