"The first genuine next-gen game" - 18 November 2006
This is the first item I've ever bought from amazon that inspired me to write a review, that in itself should speak volumes considering the thousands of pounds I've spent on amazon over the past 5 years.
Gears of War is the 6th Xbox 360 game I've purchased, bought Just Cause, Ghost Recon AW, Burnout Revenge, Oblivion, Chromehounds previously. Those 5 games were ok, but left me with this vaguely dissatisfying feeling at having shelled out so much money on the console and the games, and there was always this nagging voice at the back of my head berating me for wasting my money on this console.
Well that voice just got stabbed in the face and torn apart by a Locust grunt.
Gears of War is simply amazing. Every second I play it I am in awe, in terror, on the edge of my seat. Most games I play I take the gung ho approach and just charge in all guns blazing. Not Gears of War. I find myself terrified of open spaces, of dark areas, of anything that looks peaceful and safe. I know that as soon as I'm feeling secure, the Locust will attack and I'll find myself in the middle of a terrifying hail of gunfire, inhuman screams, yells of victory, warnings of enemies flanking me, and that's just from my teammates! Never in my life have I played a game that made me feel so completely immersed in its world. From the jaw dropping visuals to the excellant sound and the fantastic battle music that builds slowly as more and more enemies come charging at you, covering each other, throwing grenades, keeping your heads down while their comrades try and flank you.
Some of the game innovations are wonderful. Dancing from cover to cover is effortless and highly intuitive. Quickly ducking around the corner and capping a grunt with your sniper rifle then ducking back as a hail of gunfire splatters all around where your head was a half second ago... talk about adrenaline pumping. And the reload system, I don't know how they thought of it! Most games you run out of ammo, you reload, and that's it. In GoW you can just let the gun reload normally sure, but that takes time. Instead time it right and pull off a quick reload, or time it perfectly and get a damage boost reload. They took such a simple thing as reloading your gun and turned it into another adrenaline pumping task that needs to be mastered or you risk jamming your gun for several seconds. Simply brilliant.
Beautifully, wonderfully, horridly fantastic. One of the best games I've ever played on any console or on PC. I'm confident saying there wont be anything out to beat this for a long long time, and since I haven't even tried multiplayer or seen it in HD yet, that's a heck of a claim!
I am now happy that paying so much money on my xbox 360 was indeed not a waste. To have never played this game (at night, in the dark, with the volume pumped WAY up) would be a crime against the very spirit of gaming.

"Gears of War, Best game of 2006?" - 18 November 2006
As a new Xbox 360 user, i thought i'd plundge myself into the deep end and buy the highly rated "Gears of War". I expected a game that was fun but also challenged by gaming skills, and quite frankly it does both. The single player campaign has different modes for different ablities, whether your just out for some fun or you want to go harcore and frag some enemies. Both give you the most out of single player, however Co-Op mode is very fun if your with a friend. Overall the single player campaign is a very enjoyable experience especially CO-OP mode.
If you have access to Xbox Live, i highly recommend you play this game online. This is what really makes this game great! The multiplayer aspect of the game lets you diverse into 3 different modes, all of which are highly enjoyable.
This game is truly great fun, and you will have hours of enjoyment on it. I recommend this game to anyone who is truly a 360 gamer.

"Sublime " - 17 November 2006
It may not be deep or profound (but then, what game is?), but this is a game that is so finely polished that it hardly matters. It's like Halo in that it presents a series of "Greatest Hits" moments of action games: moments of fun gaming that put a smile on your face. Added to this is a superb co-op mode & some wonderful online modes ( that will be added to in future downloads). As to the graphics, they are true Next-Gen & its difficult to see anything on the PS3 coming close.
Highly recommended

"Game of the year, if not the last 3 years!" - 17 November 2006
WOW! I just have to say, if you buy no other game, get this. The graphics are outstanding, the atmosphere comes in spades, and.....just....WOW! I was lucky enough to get this the day before release, and it has blown me away! I admit to being a little fazed with current games, but Gears will be in the infamous list of games (Mario 64, Doom, Half-Life, Goldeneye, etc.) which truly change the way games are made. I seriously cannot find a fault, so unless you truly hate violent games, Buy THIS! Hats off to Epic, they have topped any game made in the last 3 years, and (I hate to say it) this will surely knock Halo off of the top spot of Xbox games.
Sorry to not go into depth like I usually do, but the blurb above tells you everything you need to know about this game. My opinion is, this is a true instant classic, from the chainsaw on your gun, to the tactical style of both your teammates, and the Locust enemies. Online, offline, or with a friend (something becoming sadly overlooked in todays online world), this systematically takes apart any other game, and shows its own class. BUY IT!
One quick note: This is an 18 cert. This means it is not for 10-year-old little Johnny for Christmas, as it is violent, and gory. Nobody wants games regulated, so please do us all a favour, and keep this out of the hands of kids. THANK YOU!

"Better than Halo!" - 17 November 2006
This is without the question THE best game ever on any platform (Even you geeky PC owners) This just blows me away on high def plasma! The graphics are gorgeous, the gameplay fluid and intuitive, the idea brilliant. This is the 1 game you must have in your collection. This is next gen and sets the benchmark for all future games, graphically and physically. I have played this game for 2 hrs solidly and I cant wait to go online with my mates and see how that pans out. BUY THIS GAME............NOW

"Mind blowing graphics and game!" - 17 November 2006
Gears of War follows the story of the humans battle against the Locust Horde. The Locust Horde have, for some reason, come to planet Sera (home of the humans in this game) to take over. It's your job to stop them. To do that, you assume the role of COG soldier Marcus Fenix. When you start the campaign mode, you find that the story begins with fellow COG soldiers breaking Marcus out from prison. Marcus did something wrong, but his battle tested skills are somehow needed. From there the story takes off, carrying you through 5 "acts" and 30 chapters. This is just the way the game is broken down.
When you start the campaign mode, you can select from 3 difficulties. Casual, which the game should take you no more than 8-10 hours to complete. Then there is the Hard mode. Hard mode is a challenge, and can easily add 4-5 hours to the game, making the campaign about 12-14 hours long. Finally, we have the mode "Insanity". Think of Halo's legendary mode. You may not even be able to do this mode on your own.
Which is why Gears features a co op mode, simialr to Halo. Co op allows you to play through Gears with a friend. You can do this over Xbox Live, through system link, or through split screen. It is most fun over Xbox Live. You simply host a campaign "server" and start playing the game. Somone can join, take the role of a computer controlled soldier, and play alongside you, which can be great fun. If they have to go, when they leave, the computer will automatically assume the role of the soldier again, so it doesn't ruin the experience. Of course, you can always invite somone on your friends list to come play through campaign with you.
Aside from the excellent campaign mode, Gears features a robust multiplayer mode. Up to 8 players are split into two teams of 4 people. Doesn't sound like much, but this game is all about cover, flanking, and working with your teammates. The game ships with 10 multiplayer maps: Canals, Clocktower, Escalation, Fuel Depot, Gridlock, Tyro Station, War Machine, Mansion, Mausoleum, and Roof Tops. In multiplayer, there are 3 modes to choose from: Warzone, Assasination, and Execution. Warzone is a standard team deatmact, and like counter strike, once you die, you spectate until the next round. Assasination requires players to kill the other teams "leader". Finally, Execution requires that in order to kil somone, you must curb stomp them (smash their heads into the ground after wounding them), chainsaw them (a chainsaw is attached to the "lancer" machine gun), or kill them with a torque bow (a bow that fires a rocket the explodes on contact.)
The weapons in Gears are very diverse. The Lancer machine gun is most common, and best of all, it has a chainsaw attached to the end of it. So when you come up close to somone, you can press "B" to rev up the chainsaw, and then go in for the kill. Other weapons include a sniper rifle, pistol, magnum, shotgun, grenade launcher, and of course, the hammer of dawn. The hammer of dawn is a gun requiring you to charge a laser beam. Once charged, the gun calls down a laser beam from an orbital satellite, blasting anything in its path.
The sound, of course, is incredible. The music is amazing, and the gun sounds are some of the best you will hear. Like I said, the graphics are some of the best I have ever seen in my life. The amount of detail is scary. For instance, when you shotgun somone up close, you can see individuals parts fly, such as the jawbone, brain, etc. But the graphics don't just excel in a gruesome kind of way. Brick walls, water reflections, blades of grass all look so real, you are going to be stunned. Like I said earlier, the BEST graphics you have ever seen.

"Best Game Ever" - 20 November 2006
I've completed this twice now with both a friend in split screen and online using a headset and the fun just doesn't stop, jumping into cover and giving covering fire as your ally moves forward, or holding out in a room using blind fire to keep the enemy from rushing you, the action is just of the highest quality you could ever expect from a computer game, it feels as if your in some kind of epic movie. the main story is pretty long, clocking in at around 12ish hours and it flys by. Even when you have completed it a few times it still brings you back for more, even as I type this at work, all I can think about is getting home and spending another 4 odd hours helping somone with thier storymode over xboxlive. If you have not already got this, you seriously owe it to yourself to buy it NOW, if you don't have an xbox360 then you need to break the biggy bank as this will not be released on any other format.

"This is what Next Gen is all about" - 20 November 2006
Having been one of the many people waiting for this game I wasnt disappointed. This is a true next gen game. The visuals are amazing and create a spooky atmosphere and makes it seem like an action movie.
The gameplay is flawless with easy controls and it is not too easy or too difficult with pretty much no loading times.
I just recently got onto live and this game is a brill muliplayer, will keep you going back again and again. Great all round action fun with the chainsaw being a favoured finishing move.
Would highly recommend this game to anyone with a 360, this game will be the reason you got one. Will be the game to tempt many Sony people over to Microsoft after the delayed release in Europe.

"Definition of Next-Gen Gaming" - 20 November 2006
As everyone else has said about this game, I agree - It's the best game I've played in a long time and the best game I've ever played.
It's a true great and a benchmark of 360 quality.
...My only doubt is about the online play - I shoot an opponent several times to the head and torso region, and nothing. Yet one or two shots at me in the same, or in some cases, less lethal places and I'm downed.
I think it would be nice if there were neutral servers seperate for Europe, America and Asia and not ones hosted by people as the host's tend to get too much benefit and you simply dont know where the server is being hosted from.
Anyway, its only a minor disappointment, game still gets 5 stars.

"Best game available!" - 20 November 2006
I'll try not to repeat everything people have already said, but anyway, here are my thoughts.
Often we all hear the hype of a new game and rarely does such a game stand-up to the hype.
This one does.
Firstly the graphics are best seen yet on any game. One particular level sees you and your mates out in the rain, its sooo real! The audio isn't bad either!
There are lots of cut scenes where you are either finishing a level or are about to enter a big battle. These cut scenes are excellent graphically and help to tell the story along the way.
The enemies are very cool too, there seems to be many different types, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The beserkers are interesting when your battling one!
Some games you will find that your character doesn't move as fluidily or quickily enough, but Gears of War isn't like this at all. The better you become at the game the easier it is to move your character around, ducking and diving for cover or sprinting for the only piece of cover a good 20 yards away.
The only downside I found with this game is that when playing split screen co-op mode, I found the game can stall every now and then for a fraction of a second. But don't let that put you off buying this, its awesome.
One of my favourite features is the on-line play. Not only can you join or host a 4-a-side match, but you can also hook-up with someone to play the single player campaign.
All in all, graphically superb, excellent audio, cut-scenes are awesome, gameplay will last for ages especially of you have xbox live.
Oh and if your the type of player that loves to go for the big gamerscore, you will need xbox live as many of the achievements can only be unlocked on line.
Good gaming!
