Editorial: With the Xbox Microsoft got it right first go. It has stunning graphics, immense power under the bonnet and little quirks to give it the edge. You can tell that every component of the Xbox has been scrutinised and all the elements play-tested so that this really is a machine created by gamers for gamers. The main processor is powered by Intel while the graphics are dealt with by NVIDIA and both have been specifically designed for the system.

What this gives you is a machine with PC power and equivalent graphics that plays on your television screen. Imagine a P4 2 GHz machine with buckets of memory and a GeForce 3 card with all the extra options--such as tri-linear, bump mapping and shadows--turned on and you might start to get close on the graphics. The set video pieces are like something out of the Final Fantasy movie and are far above anything previously seen on a console.

The eye candy doesn't stop with the cinematic sequences. Once you start playing the games themselves they ooze creativity and atmosphere. Titles such as Halo and Oddworld: Munch's Odyssey show a graphical style that make them simply the best-looking console games you will see on your TV.

It is not only graphics that Microsoft has gone to great pains to get right. Sound plays a huge part in the immersive atmosphere that the console is aiming for. To this end the Xbox boasts 256 audio channels as well as supporting Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround which all combine to give you an unrivalled audio experience. You will almost feel the bullets whizzing over your head from all directions in Halo.

The system also supports DVD playback which is accessed by a remote control sold separately. This is a good thing because you don't have to faff around pausing movies with the right trigger or left d-pad.

In Xbox you get the gaming capabilities of a top of the range PC with all the extras. You can't do your monthly accounts on it or edit your home movies but this machine is for playing with and that's what it excels at. --Jason Denwood

5 out of 5  "Microsoft XBox" - 3 March 2005
I was a proud owner of Sony Playstation 2 for four years with a game collection of over 100 games.
Then after recommendation from a good friend I bought the xbox as second game system wich I decided I would only use when certain games such as Halo 2 were not being released on PS2.

So I connected the xbox to my hifi system so that I had 5.1 sound, the same way I had connected PS2. I now personally though that the xbox had much better graphics and sound than the PS2. The other advantages being that you do not need a memory card, and also you can copy your favourite music cd on the xbox hard disc, and playback your recorded cd on certain games as backgroung music which is really cool, and it does not have sharp edges graphics like PS2 simply because xbox has a more powerful graphics card than the PS2.

The only disadvantage's the xbox has that it is larger and heaveir than the original, and in order to play DVD's on the xbox you need to purchase a DVD remote/DVD Playback unit seperately from the system.

I have now been a proud owner of xbox for four month, now, compare that to four years of the amount of hours that I must have spent playing the PS2.....I'am now selling my PS2 in order to build my xbox collection.

5 out of 5  "Excellent bit of kit" - 1 March 2005
I recieved my Xbox as a xmas present from my girlfriend about 2 years ago. She definately regrets that now. Fantastic console, no need for memory cards, great controller (the "s" version) and some superb Xbox exclusive games (halo 1 & 2 anyone?)as well as faster, smoother versions of all format games. With Doom3, Farcry, Forza Motorsport and Pariah all due out soon the amount of games available is growing as is the following on Xbox live (which has the superb support Sony can only dream of.) I have owned most consoles since the days of the NES and this so far is the best. The PS2 has more games but a lot are poor, few match up to the fun of playing Halo 2 or Pro Evo (especially now the lag patch has been produced) online. Buy this console you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5  "X Box v PS2" - 17 February 2005
Looking to buy a gaming console? Let's face it the choice is between Sony's PS2 and Microsoft's X Box. I've owned a PS2 almost since they were available and last year I bought myself a limited edition green X Box. It's larger than a PS2, I'll grant you that. But who cares? Since owning it, I've not bought a PS2 game! And Halo and Halo 2 are not available on the PS2. Looking to buy a gaming console? Take my word for it, you can't beat an X Box. No memory cards needed! Better graphics! Better sound! And for me, better controllers too! What more do you want for under £100?? Don't buy the PS2, you'll regret it...

5 out of 5  "The "BIG" BOX" - 21 February 2004
Finally having all 3 of the consoles I can honestly tell you that the Xbox should be your first choice in choosing which game console to buy.

In my opinion the ‘Xbox’ is the best console out. The ‘xbox’ is the most powerful console out at the very moment and therefore is able to create the best games. The ‘big box’ has already created many classics such as ‘Halo’, ‘Project Gotham racing1 and 2’ a ‘Knights of the Old Republic’ as well as imports of some of the greatest games such as ‘GTA: Boxed set’ and ‘Splinter cell’ in the first 2 years since it’s launch. However the things that put this console’s games apart from the other consoles are the upcoming games of 2004. These are just a few of the great games coming to the ‘Xbox’ this season.

1. Halo 2: You’ve all heard about it, it’s the sequel to the best fps in 2002 and will not disappoint previous fans. Halo 2 will also get new audiences to buy the Xbox and nearly definitely sell better than the original Halo.
2. Fable: In this game you choose how you are going to live your life. You can choose to be the hero of the land or the ultimate assassin /criminal. You start off trying to save your family but soon you get entangled into 1 of the most interesting plots you can have in a game. In fable you create your own story and act it out as the star in a movie.
3. Driver 3: With better handling than GTA with more car chases and driving stunts but still mixed with 30% of good “on foot” experience expect this to be an immediate hit following it’s 2 great predecessor’s.
4. BC: An intriguing game, which let’s you use any possible methods to save your tribe from other tribes and dinosaurs. The gameplay will be the key to success with this title.
5. Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow: The follow-up to the game that plays like MGS but has arguably better gameplay. Expect even better graphics and more methods of stealth to finnish your missions.

The ‘Xbox’ has the biggest memory system allowing you to save games and music on your xbox without having to buy and change memory cards for every other game. This also makes load times very quick proving that it also has the quickest speed. The graphics can become as strong as the gamecube’s.

My personal favorite thing about the ‘Xbox’ is that we are able to copy music onto the hard drive and then listen to our best songs while playing our favorite game. Another great feature is the ‘Xbox Live’ which makes play over internet better suited for ‘xbox’ than the ‘PS2’ and ‘Gamecube’.

Most of the excuses given to the ‘Xbox’ for being worse than the ‘Ps2’ or ‘Gamecube’ are “it’s so big, bulky and heavy”. It’s not like you’re going to be walking around town with your xbox. Another common complaint is the controllers. Did you know that the ‘Xbox’ have 2 official controllers??? The controller S is the smaller one which is easily adaptable for those ‘gamecube’ and ‘ps2’ players while the original official xbox controller can be used by first timer gamers (I personally find the controller S much easier to get used to).

All in all I would greatly recommend the xbox over any of the other consoles because of its superior and powerful console and the wide variety of games. I would also recommend this to people who are very much into internet gaming on the PC (such as myself).

5 out of 5  "simply the best" - 9 January 2004
The Microsoft Xbox is the most powerful home console in the world, as it contains only the best hardware made by the best manufactures.

The first time I played on an Xbox was at my local Electronics Boutique store (now changed to Game), I had a go Project Gotham Racing, and like pretty much everybody else, I was simply amazed by it, and then knew I had to get an Xbox. I got my Xbox on 14th March (UK release date) at 7:30am. I was one of the first people who got their Xbox's that day in my city. I bought Halo, Project Gotham and an extra controller. when I got home I quickly plugged it in and played Halo, and I was gob smacked. I couldn't believe how good it was.

NVIDIA

NVIDIA make the graphics card for Xbox which is based on the popular GeForce 3, but is essentially a GeForce 4. This Xbox graphics card has been named the x-chip. NVIDIA also make the sound card for Xbox, which supports Dolby digital. This is standard for all Xbox's, but for developers who wish to make a Xbox game, it can have 64 audio channels, which is the more than any other console. It also has 3D audio support, which basically means that even if you don't have surround sound, the Xbox will simulate surround sound even in stereo mode.

DVD Drive

The DVD drive in the xbox lets you play DVD's, with the assistance of the DVD remote. The playback quality of it is reasonably good, it's about the same as a mid-range DVD player, but importantly it is alot better than the PS2 playback.

Verdict

Design: I think it does look quite nice but i can see why other people might disagree with me.
Usability: The dashboard is very easy to use looks nice to.
Cost: As it's £130 now roughly, that is a really good price for it, much better than the starting price of £300!
Summary: Fact - its the most powerful home console in the world and for £130 that's not a lot to pay.

5 out of 5  "not the greatest but definately worth owning!" - 11 September 2003
this console can do it all! play it online thanks to xbox live, the most amazing and comprehensive online support for any console, play dvd's and of course play some truly memorable games on this baby. the graphics are the best available but hey you knew that, but did you also know it has a built in 10gigabyte hard disk which allows games to play/load faster, saving and loading of game data is lightning quick and games use it for extra features. for instance: in any normal game when your, say, travelling in a space ship, it takes the console a few minutes to load the next level/environment, right? not for xbox, new games available such as mace griphon and blinx use the harddisk to allow rapid transport and other features where you are piloting a ship one minute then when you land you can get out and carry on playing the game in the new environment, no loading times. not to mention theres so much free space you can save practically anything on it, replays, "create your own" tracks/characters (as many as you want) and new levels/weapons/vehicles from the online support.

it is in a world REVOLUTIONARY! theres more than a hundred titles including exclusives from none other than the legendary sega (my personal favourite company!) along with any game you could want, halo, phantasy star online, dead or alive 3, mech assault capcom vs snk 2 eo live, star wars knights of the old republic and many more. and for the price its going for its a bargain. the most advanced console on earth for under £120! buy it now you wont regret it!

5 out of 5  "IT JUST DOESNT GET ANY BETTER" - 12 August 2003
The Xbox console is simply the best thing since sliced bread. Together with Pentium 4 processing technolagy, NVIDIA Gforce graphical technolagy and the support of a wide range of sound features including 256 channels and surround sound compatabilty up to 5.1 digital, the gaming experiance gets more exciting every time it is used. One thing I simply love about the xbox is the fact it has a Hard Drive giving you almost limitless saving space. There is no longer any need to mess about with memory cards and wasting money needlessly, A strength not shard by the PS2. True, it is expencive to buy any offical accessory for this amazing console, however, I have never regreted spending any money for accesories or games as they are simply too good to be true for this gaming age. Extra accessories include DVD playback contaning an offical Xbox DVD remote control and ultra high quality playback. A highly versatile Xbox steering wheel that opperates well above the standard of a wheel for any other console and is simply the best tool for mastering Xbox driving games such as 'Sega GT 2002' and other high name games only for Xbox. An Xbox offical link cable for connecting two Xboxs together through the high speed network interface card installed on the Xbox for increadable multiplayer action. The latest release however, Xbox Live, is simply better than the best allowing you to play other players from around the world, download extra content to add to your games, and make friends with the Xbox live friends list, Not to mention the Xbox offical audio microphone-headphone headset giving you the ability to talk to other players during Live games. On the whole, the Xbox is worth is weight in gold, there are many more features I was unable to mention and im sure new technolagy is being created as you are reading this. To put it short, THE XBOX RULES, and thats all there is to it

If your're into quality gaming, and wish to be entertained for hours on end, then do yourself a favour and get an X-box! Also, get the following games to go with it, all 5 star ratings in my opinion .....Halo, Jet Set Radio Future, Splinter Cell, Rallisport Challenge, and Panzer Dragoon Orta. The only drawback is that the thing is so damn heavy! I almost sprained my arm carrying it home from the shops!
