Editorial: The role-playing game seems to be in real danger of collapsing in upon itself with many new titles appearing almost indistinguishable from each other and increasing complexity making them extremely off-putting for all but existing fans of the genre. Fable, though, is something different. Created with input from famous games designer Peter Molyneux (designer of titles such as Populous and Black & White), it aims to be as accessible as it is open-ended, as the character you control gains experience, ages and chooses whether to follow the path of good or evil--or occupy a grey area between the two. Fable is played entirely in real-time, so there are no random encounters or turn-based battles to endure; your character gains experience in four main areas--general, strength, skill and will--during all their actions from combat to talking to villagers. Specialising in a certain area allows your character to become an archetypal fighter, wizard or jack-of-all-trades. The game's real flexibility though is in the way you interact with other characters in the game, with the option to charm, bribe, intimidate and flatter as appropriate. A character's attitude towards you is further influenced by your notoriety within the game world and even your sex appeal, allowing you to play the game exactly as you want. The only problem with Fable is that the combat is a little unconvincing and awkward, but with so much else going on this hardly seems to matter. --David Jenkins

"Fable" - 25 February 2005
This was the first time I had played a game of this genre and have played it through to completion 3 times, each time in a different good/evil style. The characters encountered by the "Hero" are authentic and believable which all adds to the engrossing atmosphere of the game. The object of the game is to develop your "Hero" into a good or evil character to be proud of, through a series of heroic quests to enhance your good or evil side.By performing the quests you gain experience and gold to enhance your standing in society and you engage in other activities between quests to bolster your bank balence and upgrade your experience.(Trading/property ownership/and bandit/guard extermination.) I am surprised and disappointed by the 16+ rating for this game. The game has a very strong morality theme which perhaps is wasted on an older more cynical gamer.(If you keep doing bad things you turn into a red eyed horned beast who scares everyone, the opposite if you do good things). One thing is sure is that you will rarely play the same game as the same person twice.I eagerly look forward to Fable II.

"finally!" - 12 October 2004
this game has taken years, but it didnt even take me a day to buy it, and you should do, its literally diablo meets black and white meets phantasy star online (but not online obviously) meets the sims (to a lesser degree, but still, you can get married, more than once, and to men...) meets morrowwind, mixed in a big pot with lots of graphics and real time combat thats all over any other game remotely similar, and you have one of the best, if not the most accomplised polished game ever (so far....halo 2 anyone?) the thing that's really got me hooked however is that, unlike in morrowind and similar games, you spend ages creating some kickass character, but once you've done that, there's nothing to do, or worse, the combat system is just rubbish (cough..morrowind) but in fable you get to make the most of your character and go crazy with them. plus, the characters advance pretty quickly so you don't get bored or stuck in a rut unlike some other games. plus the magic in fable (or 'will') is very special, in almost ever roleplaying game ive played i always end up back as a sword guy coz the magic, no matter how mystical or powerful, is always a lot more hassle than its worth, fable is different, you actually want to use and develop all the spells you get, coz theyre so damn cool ie. the fireball (level that up!) and lightning. you can just throw them into battle as fast as anything, no messing about with silly menus or mana (ur mana recharges itself, but u can also use potions for quick charging) finally, the comedy element, its got a black humour to it just like blacka nd white did, which basically keeps you interested, unlike a lot of roleplaying games that are too serious for they're own good, its not over the top, but just enough to make u laugh when wandering a city and someone shouts 'he don't look much of a chicken chaser to me, but then i aint never seen one before' (a nickname u earn early on) whatever, if your at all tempted by this game, even just coz of the hype, buy it on impulse, you'll enjoy it.

"A well rounded RPG for all levels of ability" - 14 February 2005
Whether you're a young wiz kid or from the days of 10 sided dice this is a well round RPG for all skill levels. There is great depth to this game with lots of side quests and ability to enhance your character's life beyond the core story of the game. Get married, become a property mogul or hone your skills as a theif. Make the citizens cringe or jump for joy when you appear. You can zoom through this game and beat it in a few days or you can take your time and explore, explore, explore. You can even go back and play as an alter ego instead of an Angel be a Devil. There is lot's to discover if you have the patience to look and the game has some interesting quirks if you use your imagination and test it's limitations. My complaint would be that it can be easy to get swooped up into the core story and end up finishing the game quickly the first time especially when you are being prompted by the Guildmaster to take a quest card all the time but if you resist the nagging there is quite a lot to do and many choices to make for good or ill and the games flexibility allows for more then one game play to take your character in a different direction. Biggest let down is that you cannot customise your character or choose a different sex when you start out as in many games but you can give yourself hairdos, beards, mustaches, tatoos and even wear a dress if it takes your fancy during the course of the game. You can change your persona and aligment during the or intentially play all the way as a goody two-shoes and then play again as an uber meanie. You can even give yourself new titles to reflect your status or project just the right personality to the NPCs. As someone who has played table top RPGs and computer RPGs since the 80's I would say overall I am impressed with this game and the graphics are outstanding.

"Now what shall i do..." - 7 February 2005
Fable is an amazing game. Buy it.I spend hours on it just experimenting i own every ownable building on the game.I have drank thousands of pints and thrown up in random homes. I have bocome fat than spent the day running round the town to try and lose weight. All before i completed the first quest. If you want you can complete all the missions the first day you get it but i gurantee you wont. Youll start off doing missions then youll start experimenting then youll do a mission and the story will grip you and you wont be able to put down the pad. BUY IT YOU NEED THIS GAME (Warning your social life outside of fable will be destroyed)

"Addictive but much too easy!" - 5 February 2005
Being almost a complete novice to the X-box (Only a few hours on friends' X-boxes playing Halo2 and Star Wars Battlefront) and all my previous games being on the PC I expected my first real foray into my new X-box would prove difficult and challenging! However after just a short period of time I was surprised to find that I had actually completed the game with relative ease! Once you have got the basic skills involved in combat it is quite easy to beat any baddy that comes your way in fable as long as you look out for their weaknesses. However that said the ability to build up your character buy new equipment, change your image and interact with your environment is the game's real strong point and it can prove slightly addictive. Unfortunately even this cannot last forever and after not too long you will definitely want to carry out a few more quests and work your way through the story line. Even as a complete X-box novice I still found this game easy so I hate to think how easy it would have been for those more experienced on the X-box. While the game lasts it is a bit of light fun but don't expect it to keep you busy for too long. I do hope though that they build upon the game's strong points and bring out a more challenging sequel.

"Fable - The Best RPG Ever?" - 29 January 2005
At first I was reluctant to buy this game, having only played one RPG before (Neverwinter Nights) and in terms of games I am often reluctant to try new things. But, after having this game recommended to me several times, I gave in and thus far have had no regrets, there is such depth and freedom to the game. Forget your GTA etc. for although you have the freedom to do more or less what you want in those games, in Fable what you do effects who you are and NPCs' opinions of you. Your character will physically change as you progress through the game, depending on whether you live a good or a bad life. I personally find this a massive hook, because it seems to add an extra level to the game, or an incentive to try and live a good life the second time you play through it, after you live a life of evil the first time, the possibilities seem to be truly endless.Great game... Buy it!

"Amazing Role-playing game!" - 19 December 2004
Fable is a fantastic game when you choose the role of good or evil. You can do loads of interactible thigs such as get drunk, get married, get divorced, get a haircut, get tatoos and even go fishing.Train as a young boy to become the strongest, fastest and most acurate person ever. You can become a devastating swordsman or a powerful magic user. Ethier way Fable is a fantastic game and not very much games will be able to match up to it.

"Any Baldurs gate 2 shadows of amn fans...buy this game!!!!!" - 16 December 2004
I have this game for the xbox, and it is utter brilliance!! The rpg style is quick and easy to pick up and it's easier to decide the allingment of your character. To make him good, simply suck up to everyone around, and to make him (It is only a male) evil, simply hack down every villager in sight. Your character starts life as a child in oakvale until bandits come, kill his family blah blah blah....you've got the story. You train for years to become a hero, and when you become pewerful, then you decide how to lead your life and end others. The only setback is the controlling of the camera angles, it pisses you off so much when you can't see in front of you and end up running on to a fire! Dammit! You train in areas of archery and assinations and all the usual magic and swords business. If you like black isle games (Icewindale collection, Neverwinter nights and Baldurs gate Series) then you will love this game, and thankfully, it is not as crap as morrowind, god that was awful. Sit back, and live your character to death

"A very good game!" - 28 October 2004
My little brother bought this game before i had the chance to advise him on whether he should or not, i read the reviews and was dissapointed to see that most people had reviewed it negatively. After playing the game solidly over the last three days i have to disagree with a number of reviews here. The game is fantastic. The game is accused of being to short, and if you played each quest one after another without taking time in the large enviroments to gain experience and improve your skills, then the game im sure yes - it would be short. But i am enjoying traveling through the game helping travelers who find themselves in harms way, improving my attributes to become a muscular skilled swordsman. i am enjoying every aspect of the game, the crowds cheering as i enter there town, fighting back trolls and wearwolfs, collecting new weapons and armor, and returning home after all this to my wife. a great game, with the origionality that 'Zelda' had when it first appeared.

"Fable" - 27 October 2004
The idea of fable is fascinating. A RPG that allows you to do anything. The people who gave it a bad rating here because it was too short (9 hours or 12 hours). Thats why the game is a unique experience. There is so much to do next to the main storyline..Did any of you guys ever marry, tried to get all silver-keys or bought a house? THIS is what the game makes special... The way the character rises the level is brilliant in my opinion (using a skill (magic/trading/Bows/Sword/fist) brings XP which can be allocated to new things like more strength/more health/new spells (or a higher level of one).
