5 out of 5  "Mortal Kombat Deception - The Ultimate Fighting Game" - 22 January 2005
I have been a fan of Mortal Kombat since MKI on the SNES. MKI was a huge success and this continued throughout the series. Mortal Kombat Deception uses the same award-winning fighting formula combined with excellent new features to make a superb game. Many old Mortal Kombat favourites are back (Mileena, Sindel, Nightwolf, Ermac to name a few) as well as many brand new warriors (Darrius, Hotaru, Havik to name a few)
The main thing that separates this MK game from all others is the new ways to play. Not only can you fight against friends and the computer in traditional Kombat, but you can also engage in Chess Kombat and Puzzle Kombat.
** Basic Kombat ** - The same game engine is used to provide players with 2 fighting styles and 1 weapon is back from MK Deadly Alliance. Moves can be strung together to develop your own combos and the best part of MK is still there - the fatalities. Each character has two fatalities as well as one Hara Kiri (Suicide move).
** Chess Kombat ** - A brilliant version of chess where you choose MK characters as pieces. When you go to 'take a piece', you must fight to decide the winner. Spells and bonus squares add an extra level of strategy to the game!
** Puzzle Kombat ** - Puzzle Kombat is extremely addictive to play and is similar to Tetris. You have to match coloured blocks before breaking them with special coloured dragon medallions. The loser is finished off in true Mortal Kombat style.......
** Konquest ** - This new Mortal Kombat Single player feature is excellent. You start off as young Shujinko running around in Earth realm when you meet Damashi and agree to go on a conquest to recover special objects for the Elder Gods. As Shujinko, you can roam anywhere throughout 6 realms and meet characters from previous MK games. By the end of your mission, you are an old man and Shujinko is unlocked as a playable character. The Konquest mode is the portal to many Krpyt unlockables such as Alt costumes, art etc. The Krpyt is similar to that in MK:DA.
A new feature to Mortal Kombat is online play, where you can battle other players online in traditional kombat, puzzle kombat and chess kombat. This tops off an already excellent game. If you are a fan of the MK series or you simply enjoy fighting games, then this is essential. I can honestly say that it is the best fighting game I have ever seen!

4 out of 5  "The fun fighter" - 25 November 2004
Mortal Kombat Deception has something special over all other beat-em-ups: quick, simple fun. Most fighting games at the moment have dozens of unique combos to learn for each character. Each combo requires precision in timing and execution. To master this can take weeks of practice. And then there are all the other characters to learn...

Midway has recognised that not everyone wants to spend weeks learning different combos, so with Mortal Kombat Deception you get mostly simple combos and a few special moves. This makes the game much easier to pick up and play reasonably well. If like me you are trying to demonstrate the game to cynical friends, this raises its appeal, as it only takes a few fights before they start feeling that they have got the hang of the game.

Of course, this means that you will get beaten by rookies! However, the addition of a 'Hara Kiri' move, which allows you to kill yourself before your opponent can, allows you to take the shine off of their victory, and helps to avoid total embarrassment!

Should you tire of the normal fighting mode, the other modes will add a lot to the life of the game. They feature Chess, Tetris, and an adventure game; all clones of other games, but with a distinct Mortal Kombat theme to them. Each one therefore shares the sense of comedy and simple fun, which anyone can pick up and enjoy.

Of course, there are flaws. The extra game modes become tedious quickly, especially when playing against the computer. The character animations are also poor, with characters switching poses without any joining frames. It creates sudden movements which can get annoying to watch. Finally, there are very few long, varied or tough combos to pull off in the fighting mode, which will frustrate those who like spending weeks learning different moves. If that is you, maybe rent Deception for a couple of nights for a few laughs. For everyone else, though, buy this. The different modes and simple, comic gameplay, will keep you playing for months!

5 out of 5  "OH MY GOD - HE JUST SNAPPED HIS OWN NECK ! ! ! ! ! !" - 23 December 2004
Seeing a new fatality or Hara-kiri for the first time is worth the price of the game alone!!!!!

I bought this game just over a week ago and I have to say that it has kept me spellbound ever since (I even sneaked in a sicky with work so that I could finish the Konquest mode).

The game itself outshines anything that the mortal kombat series has thrown up before it, beautiful backgrounds, stunning animation and some seriously bone crunching combos - its just a shame that after a weeks worth of playing that I have unlocked all but one character (the ever elusive noob saibot/smoke pairing).

The fatalaties and hara-kiri moves are as camp and over-done as ever and look absolutely brilliant (I couldnt believe the first time I saw a character tear out her own thigh bones and stab them into her eyes, outrageous-well over the top-and completely brilliant).

Online on Live is quality as well - nothing beats turning a certain defeat around by sending your opponent slamming into the meat grinder and laughing all the way back into the lobby as they send torrents of abuse back at you.

The game gets a solid five stars - had it been simply the combat it would have been a 4.5, but the konquest mode, chess mode, and puzzle fighter make this one of the most entertaining packages I have played for a long time.

5 out of 5  "MORTAL KOMBAT DECEPTION ROCKS!" - 29 November 2004
Mortal Kombat was the first ever computer game that i got,
and was the only game i could spend ages on for hours every
single day!

I am a huge fan of Mortal Kombat and have collected all of
them:(MK1, 2, 3, Ultimate MK3, advanced, Trilogy, 4, Gold,
Mythologies, special forces & Deadly Alliance, and Deception)
since i got sega mega-drive when i was little.
And every time a new one came out it was more than 10x better,
but Deception is going to be 100x better than Deadly Alliance.

There are loads of classic characters that are back like:
Baraka, Ermac, Jade, Kabal, Nightwolf, Noob-Saibot, Smoke,
Raiden, Scorpion, Sindel, Sub-Zero, Tanya and the secret
character Lui Kang, who is a zombie.

There are loads of new features like: Death Traps, Mini Game's
and Kari Kari(suicidal) moves and Onine Kombat.

In most level there are Death traps, which kill your opponant
in one shot eg.The Dark Prison(spiked walls that closes onto
the opponant!
Here are the names of the levels, which if your a Mortal Kombat
fan you will reconise some of them! [the ones with a * beside
them means there is a death trap(s)]:
Beetle Lair
Slaughter House*
Sky Temple*
YinYang Island*
Chamber Of Artifacts
Nethership Interior
Hell's Foundary*
Golden Desert**
Dark Prison*
Lower Mines***
Dragon Mountain
Lui Kang's Tomb
Courtyard
Portal
The Pit*
Quan Chi's Fortress*
The Dead Pool*
Kuatan Palace*
Living Forest
Dragon King's Temple*
Nexus*

The Konquest is even more better, because you start as a
16 year-old teenager, who is called 'Shujinko' and end as
a 60 year-old man, and when you complete Konquest he will
become a playable character. In Konquest you can meet literally
every single Mortal Kombat character including Motaro, the
boss of MK3! Also you can battle people from the previous games
even though you can't play as them eg.Johnny Cage & Sonya Blade.
+more!

Deception is abit like Dead or Alive, but with alot of blood
and can make your opponant EXPLODE! On most levels your start
in an area and you think "Hey, i'm not in the right arena", but
you are in the right arena, all your have to do is blast them
through a railing or wall, and to make it even better the
'uppercuts' are back, so you can punch them in the sky and make
them land on old wood flooring and make them fall to the next
area!

I recommend this game to all Beat'em-up and Mortal Kombat fans!
i give this game top 5 stars!

5 out of 5  "DECEPTION = OUTSTANDING!!" - 26 December 2004
WHAT CAN I SAY? seriously this has got to be the best Mortal kombat game ever. Nice smooth fighting, new levels/characters, beautiful graphics if anyone likes fighting games this is the one for you.

Pro's
*New characters
*Simple fighting moves/combo's
*Outstanding graphics
(u can go from one part of a level into another)
*More blood and gore than ever (parents won't be pleased lol)
*Super, Super quick loading considering its a big game.

Con's (only minors)
*The extra chess and puzzle games can get annoying.
*Chess is long winded and in order to take a square u have to fight.
(ok at first bit it gets on your nerves after a while)
*Puzzle, is fun to begin with gets boring plus the comp usually wins.

Other than that i have no complaints at all! this is a super game if you own a xbox/ps2 GO BUY IT! u won't be dissapointed.
I can't wait fot the next game, KEEP EM COMIN'!!

5 out of 5  "oh my thunder god" - 29 December 2004
This game is great because of mainly four thing's

good graphics
Lots of GORE
Tons of charachters
and the all disemboweling fatalities are back

But your probably thinking 'wow he's only said 4 things' but i named four things that they could have improved onbecause everything else is top notch.
the combos are difficult to pull off sometimes but are very rewarding. The konquest mode is great because it gives you the story from shujinko's point of view since the MK world was madeand if your patient you will earn more koins and meet all the charachters ever except for reptile who just says 'leave me be'

all in all a 100% sucessfull game
