Editorial: Exploring 20 square miles of African savannah and jungle is never an easy task. But when you’re up against an army of highly trained mercenaries, the danger becomes unimaginable. Welcome to the world of Far Cry 2. Far Cry 2 has some of the best explosions in the business | Vehicles are great for cover as well as transport | It’s best to keep some of the game’s factions on your side | The environmental graphics are both stunning and highly varied | It’s been over four years since the release of the first Far Cry, and Far Cry 2 has almost nothing in common with it beyond being a first-person shooter with excellent graphics and advanced artificial intelligence. It’s by a different developer, and you now play one of eight different mercenary characters out to catch an arms dealer nicknamed “The Jackal.” The sci-fi enemies have also been jettisoned in favour of a much more realistic game where survival skills are just as important as a good aim. The rules of engagement--either by stealth or all guns blazing--are entirely up to you. Key Features - Virtual safari: The game features 20 square miles of terrain for you to travel, filled with realistic fauna and flora and fully destructible trees and buildings.
- Fiery realism: With an all-new graphics engine created just for the game, fire moves and propagates exactly as in real-life, with vegetation breaking and snapping realistically.
- The coming storm: A dynamic weather system changes to reflect your mood, with the sky turning dark and stormy during bad times.
- Jungle survival: Highly realistic weapons degrade with use, bullets need to be dug out of your body, and vehicles break down if pushed beyond their limits.
- Buying friends: Meet and co-operate with fellow mercenaries as you pit different factions against one another in a war-torn African state.
About the Developer: Ubisoft Montreal Ubisoft’s huge development studio in Canada has created many of the French publisher’s biggest hits, including the Splinter Cell,/i> series, the modern Prince of Persia games, Rainbow Six: Vegas, Assassin’s Creed, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and the Far Cry sequels and spin-offs.

"Savour the calm before the storm, then go in with your flame thrower and grenades." - 27 October 2008
Farcry 2 is a very enjoyable game. I played the first on my computer, and I feel that this certainly lives up to the quality. The beginning may be a little slow, and I had to turn the sensitivity on the joystick down, but you soon get the hang of it, and the controls are much the same as COD4 and Battlefield Bad Company.
The thing that struck me most of all was the realistic nature of the game. This is in more ways than the graphics, which are excellent, and the sun effects are brilliant, but in the game play itself. I was beginning to get the sense of GTA with the large open map, getting lost and checking your map, but then the effect of never leaving your characters eyes really comes into it's own.
The dedication of this effect sets the game apart; Jumping into a van to leg it away from a raid, getting the map out on your lap to check the way, while trying to run people over, and not crash into a tree are rare occasions in games, and makes this one seem even more realistic.
The map is beautifully done, and it gives you a sense of the claustrophobic atmosphere of jungles, and deep river ravines, and, on the edges of the maps, the openness to drive around chasing zebra.
I would not judge the online element of the game yet, as it is so new and does not have the online basis of bad company (which had many of the same problems when that was new) and COD 4. But the single player campaign is surprisingly long, and when other games like COD4 would have finished, this gives you a whole new map to explore. Which also means that: like a real traveller, you are never completely sure what is around the corner, or indeed where you are, or which way is home, and sometimes even what time it is. Lol
The buddy system is cool, and I did feel a little remorse when I had to mercy kill my best mate. But when push came to shove, I decided that this was the life they had chose, and so went to save the innocents in the church.
Play this game. And don't listen to the feedback left by people who have only played the demo, or haven't bothered to get past the first mission before moaning about anything and nothing here, it is raising the bar for games, and I hope more games try to match it.

"Just because you have to plan your attacks doesn't make this a bad game... it's fantastic" - 26 October 2008
Having really enjoyed Far Cry Instincts on the original Xbox, I was really excited to see Far Cry 2 coming out on the 360. When it was announced that there would be no 'special abilities' like in Instincts, I was at first a bit disappointed. But then I watched the preview videos. Wow. It looked amazing, and now having played it, I can confirm that it really is.
I don't understand why people have reviewed this sounding surprised that it's not like Instincts - it's been well known for ages that this wouldn't have the same Predator mode of Instincts, so if that's what these reviewers wanted then why did they bother picking it up in the first place. Do people not read what features a game has before they go out and splash the cash anymore?? Or do some think that because its another FPS its going to be exactly the same as COD4? Because it's not. The gameplay is very different, and that is nothing but a good thing.
After a few hours of getting used to the gameplay, controls, and environment of this game, it really begins to shine - all you need is a bit of patience and practice. This is helped because there are no load times as you travel through the huge country, so you're not sitting around waiting for a new area to load, instead you can just move on to your next target. Missions can involve pretty much anything, they can be completed in many different ways, and they really do require skill and planning. Much more rewarding that running in COD4 style and hoping for the best.
There are so many good features of the game that I could go on and list them, but no doubt these will be talked about enough. My main point is that this is NOT the same as the original Far Cry, and it is NOT like COD4 just because its a shooter. So if its one of those you want, don't buy it. But if you have time, patience and are actually thoughtful enough to plan how you are going to beat this game, then 100% buy it now. You wont regret it.

"Please do not miss this game!!" - 15 October 2008
Just to inform readers that the OFFICIAL release date is 21st October '08 in the U.S and 24th October in Europe, (thanks to Maurice for the correct information).
After reading the official developers blog and watching more than a handful of developer interviews and videos of in-game footage I have come to the conclusion that 'Far Cry 2' is a MUST BUY for anyone who owns an xbox 360, PS3 or PC, available for all these platforms from the above release date.
There are plenty of reasons why this game should be high on any gamers list. Some of the features include a 50km square open world with environments based on some of africas most striking landscapes such as savannah, jungle, swamp and desert. A dynamic and realistic weather system where the wind and rain affects the lush vegetation. One of the most talked about features of this game is the game engines ability to simulate realistic fire propogation through vegetation and other combustible elements including timber structures. Many of the in game structures are also destructable giving rise to even more tactical choice when deciding how to eliminate the enemy, do you shoot them, burn them, or do you just grenade a building so the roof collapses on top of them ?.
The developers have also said that the AI is not scripted meaning that your enemies are un-predictable and will behave differently on a second play through.
For me though, the most exciting aspect of this game will be the multi-player experience, featuring all the classic game modes such as deathmatch, team DM, and a twist on capture the flag called 'hunt the diamond', and if all above is not enough to tempt you then how about the games inclusion of one of the most powerful and user friendly map editors created for any console game, giving you the ability to create almost any type of environment for for multi-player. Choose from a vast library of objects, architecture, and more than a handful of vehicles for the air, land or water. Sculpt the land into mountains, lakes or even an urban setting to battle in using quick, powerful landscaping tools with user control being at the centre of creation.
There is still much I haven't talked about here so to find out more don't just take my word for it, put it on your list and prepare to ENJOY!!

"A Big Step Foward" - 20 October 2008
This game is a truely revolutionary first person shooter in both single player and multiplayer terms.Far Cry 2 will elevate the Far Cry franchise to the heights of the 360 premier shooters, i.e Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3.The singleplayer campaign boasts a 50 square kilometre open world, at which the player is permitted to explore at will.Picking up missions in the style of other open world games like Grand Theft Auto IV.Whilst the campaign is impressive in its own right, multiplayer is where Far Cry 2 is really going to stand out.FC2s map editor is so advanced and yet so accessible that anyone can make a coheirent and playable map in a matter of minutes.More skilled creators will take longer and reap the rewards. So in theory there will be no end to the amount of playable maps in online multiplayer which should be reason alone to pick this up.If they manage to nail the satisfying gunplay of something like Call of Duty 4 combined with the revamped map editor and the stunning visuals, theres no reason why Far Cry 2 cant rise to the throne of the 360s best shooter.

"Could have been so much more" - 20 October 2008
Having had the chance to preview this title all I can say is that the controller is more then hyper-sensitive (even on the lowest setting) making it is very difficult to aim. The graphics are fairly disappointing on the Xbox 360 with some graphics anomalies (like shadows with flickering stripes etc). You can tell this is a ported PC game and plays poorly on the console.

"Disappointing - not like farcry 1" - 23 October 2008
Welcome to Farcry 2 or should that be GTA (Farcry).
Let me stress that this is NOTHING like the original farcry which was full of atmosphere and included some cool upgrades like being able to run faster and see in thermal vision. Far cry 1 was ace!
Now i come to Farcry 2 - open world not linear (which is not for the better) and the atmosphere it just not there. Instead the game has a 'do what you like when you like' theme, unlocking safehouses to save your game as you progress. Sound like GTA to you yet?
After 3 hours i've become bored with the singleplayer game - however the multiplayer is slightly better.
Only 4 game modes including capture the diamonds (flag) but these modes can be played on custom made maps. That's right - you can make your own maps to use online So there's no getting bored with the maps supplied by ubisoft.
Unfortunately the actual gameplay is a long war short of COD4 or Halo 3 but if you don't mind less realistic movement of players (ie poping out of a jeep when killed) then you might well enjoy the online part.
To sum up - singleplayer is like GTA and not farcry 1 and online multiplayer is reasonable.
EDIT - i've got some negative feedback about my review of this game, but i assure you it is not like farcry 1. if you want a GTA type game then this might be for you but like farcry 1 it is NOT. I notice the next review after mine has put the game on ebay after 1 day. So i'm not on my own in thinking this.

"far cry 2 xbox 360" - 10 October 2008
This game is going to be the best game ever made. I'm a huge Far Cry fan, and this beauty is going to be a real treat. If you are online on xbox 360, you need to buy this game. It's going to be so much fun, i love making maps, and playing other peoples maps, i can't wait. This game is going to be no 1 for years, so i'll see you online. Happy gaming.

"Not as expected" - 24 October 2008
Beware! This game is absolutely nothing like the other Farcry games! The controls are clunky and unintuitive, the vehicles unrealistic and no fun to drive. About the only thing that lives up to the hype is the fire and explosions. I'm not saying that you won't like it, but I personally found this game annoying and no fun whatsoever. If you can, try before you buy!
