5 out of 5  "Edge of your seat scary!" - 27 October 2008
Firstly I'd like to say I don't normally write reviews but after playing this game I felt i needed to share my thoughts.

I initially started playing this game on easy due to being scared purely by the hype, then after about 3 hours I felt I wasn't doing the game justice. The (ugly & gross looking) creatures were too easy to kill and the amount of ammo lying around was in abundance which didn't make it feel like a survival game, which this is intended to be. So i started again on hard. Its worth noting here you can't change the difficulty setting during a campaign and will have to start from the begining again. But on hard it is now a survival! There is less ammo lying around and the creatures take more to kill... you will now have to take off limbs strategically and use your special abilities to conserve ammo. I was killed 2 times in about 50 mins on Hard and none in the 3 hours on easy!

The graphics in the game are brilliant, the lighting and smoke effects will keep you looking out and chasing shadows, while on the edge of your seat! The audio is even better, the backing soundtrack is worthy of any horror movie and the simple sound of a bottle falling from a table will make you jump out your seat! Although being frightened I felt compelled to carry on, thats testament to the story.

There a few little niggles though; it can be a little repetitive, a bit of back tracking (but there are still surprises going over old ground) and there isn't a wide array of enemies. We shouldn't dwell on these because the game does what it intends to do... Scare!

Play this game on hard to do it justice and be prepared to get scared! If that's what you want from a game you must buy this!

5 out of 5  "Dead Good" - 26 October 2008
10/10 Seriously awesome. Buy it.

Basically what EA Redwood Shores have done is recreate Bioshock and set it in space. But the overall effect is much better than Bioshock.

It's a shooter/horror, starring you as Isaac, an engineer sent along with a rescue team to find out what happened to the USG Ushimura, a deep-space 'Planet Cracker' class mining vessel.

Things go wrong roughly 20 seconds into the first cut-scene, and from there on you're following the orders of what's left of your team as you attempt to get the Ishimura's systems back online, fighting off the hordes of beasties (Necromorphs) infesting the ship and trying to find out what happened to your girlfriend who was working there as part of the 1000-strong crew.

What makes Dead Space better than Bioshock is Isaac, he's an engineer, and all the weapons you get are things an engineer would be handy with so it's slightly more believable. You get stasis modules to slow down fast-moving machinery, you get Plasma Cutters for slicing legs off at the hips and arms off at the shoulders and heads off at the neck, flamethrowers for lighting enemies up en masse, Rippers - remote controlled saw blades for, that's right, you guessed it! And many more.

The fun comes when you combine different abilities, like when you've only got 4 plasma cutters left you can hit a Necro with stasis and take your time shooting off its limbs one by one then finishing it off with a nice and gory curb stomp.

You can keep your eyes open and deviate from the 'engineer roleplaying' because scattered around the Ishimura you'll find some neat military hardware to put to good use should you wish to, like the rapid-fire and extremely deadly pulse rifle.

Navigation throughout the mammoth spaceship is aided by a neat menu system, press Back on the control pad to bring up an instant 3D holographic projection of your location and objectives, zoom in and out and rotate it around to your heart's content, it's impossible to get lost especially as you can bring up a 'breadcrumb' trail at any time to show you where to go next.

Exploration off the beaten track is rewarded with special units that you can use to upgrade your environmental suit with more air and HP, or your weapons with more damage and other neat features. You can also find credits lying around which you can spend in the Ishimura's Store, outlets of which are scattered around each level. The store stocks new weapons, allows you to convert any schematics found into buyable hardware, store extra ammo/items you've picked up and sell any goodies that you've found for extra credits. Your suits have limited inventory so you've got to think carefully about what to carry around so you can pick up more stuff, and there's no unlimited ammo so aim carefully.

There are a host of neat ideas in Dead Space to liven up the gameplay. You've got zero-G environments where you can kick off one wall and land on another and watch as the whole room spins to your new perspective, ceilings become floors, walls become ceilings, doors you didn't see before can now be reached. Later on it gets trickier, Necromorphs can also jump from walls to ceilings and you can have great fun blasting them out of weightless vacuum mid-flight. Later on again you get the same thing, with the addition of zero-air which makes you watch your air meter on the back of your suit (next to your health bars also on the back of your suit) and adds a whole new dynamic to these areas.

Probably the neatest idea of all is the complete lack of HUD, all you've got onscreen is you, the environment, and your crosshairs which vary in type depending on your current weapon selection. This allows you to make much better use of your screen, you'll be able to easily see an explosive cannister next to that wave of little beasties heading for you, you'll be able to look all around you and notice those cabinets that you missed before, you'll be able to admire the full gory detail from third person perspective as something flies out of the wall towards you, grabs your leg and... don't worry, you'll find out.

In terms of immersion, think of the first time you played Resident Evil and the dobermans jumped through the window, or Bioshock the first time you opened a safe in an empty room then turned around to discover it wasn't as empty as you thought. Now multiply by 10 and add a constant stream of distant bumps in the night, nails scraping down a blackboard, a dash of violins constantly building up into a crescendo and play it crouched in a pitch black air duct whilst the hairs on the back of your neck stand up because you're pretty sure there's an Alien behind you. With sharp teeth. Breathing down your neck. That's pretty much Dead Space, scariest creepiest and most horrific game I've ever played. Oh, and blood, lots of it, everywhere.

5 out of 5  "Wow a little gem, with BIG TEETH" - 27 October 2008
This game hasn't been overly advertised so there is a chance you may let it slip through your gaming fingers. I brought this game and played it like the other reviewer for about 4 hours straight off, You get to a save point and think I'll have a break, but then something kicks in and you say to yourself I'll just see what's in the next room and before you know it your well into the level ............. Again!!!!!!!!

Everything is good or great about this game, you can get help to find your way if you get lost so you don't spend hours back tracking, the creatures and weapons are good fun and pretty gory, graphics and sound are all excellent, the trick to close combat is learn your controls, slow thing down so you can get into a better position to counter attack, otherwise you may lose your camera angle and end up in a blind panic or dead.

If your not sure if you like space horror games this has got to be the one to try, and it probably will convert you.

5 out of 5  "OOOOOOOH ME PANTS" - 25 October 2008
Top notch harumscarum, this is a pantsoiling space nightmare.
Twistywisty corridors with Mr Shadow in every corner beckoning the unwary traveller. You pluck up the courage and take a step, have a cup of tea, take a step....are you ok Mr Shadow, mmmmmmm poke poke..AAAAAAAGGGGHHHH.Tea in your lap........BUY IT.BUT NOT FOR KIDS OR SLIGHTLY TENDER ADULTS.

4 out of 5  "Dead Space Excellent SF / Horror game" - 24 October 2008
Definitely an 18+ game due to the scary and gory elements. Excellently paced in-game introduction of new functions, powers and weapons. The use of the XBox controller buttons and triggers is different from the "normal" COD style first person shooter so takes some time to learn the correct sequence of actions. Third person view and lack of an On-screen HUD (its on the characters suit)makes it more cinematic. Is a very deep game storyline especially if you download the backissues of the story from XBox Live or watch the manga style cartoon movie which is also available. Has a "Gears of War" style "stomp" attack to finish off downed beasties which is both disgusting to view and satisfying revenge. The flamethrower is superb. The only downside is that there is not XBox Live play.

5 out of 5  "A Truly Scary Masterpiece." - 24 October 2008
I just got the game today and Ive played about 4 hours. Its one of those games where you're scared to keep playing but you just cant stop yourself. The graphics are almost photo realistic and the sense of immersion is second to none. The sound especially the ambient sounds are disturbingly realistic while the weapons and monsters are unique and varied. A note of warning though, its note for the fainted hearted.I'm no sissy but its got my heart racing quite a few times. If you like survival horror you'll love this game. Even if you're not a fan of survival horror its still worth buying.

5 out of 5  "Amazing - simple amazing, A MUST buy!" - 24 October 2008
Do you like Doom or Doom 3?

Do you like Resident evil 4?

Then this game is for you!

I've only played this for about 90 mins so far but what i've seen has been very impressive. The whole layout of the menus (on a hologram in front of you), the dark nature of the buildings i've seen so far, the excellent map which in 3D ensures you don't get lost, the save system which is a unit on the wall every-so-often. All of these things and many others mean this is a gripping game. the last game that was like this was Doom 3 on the original xbox which i loved! This is also on an equal status with RE4 in my eyes.

I know it's early for me to review this but i'm sure it's going to be one of the best games of the year.

If you like survival horror then you have to buy this game.
