Editorial: Call of Duty returns, and to many people’s surprise, it’s going back to World War II. While original series creators Infinity Ward brought the series into the modern day, developer Treyarch are setting out to make the definitive historical first-person shooter. The Soviet attack on Berlin features intense street battles | Take on the Japanese navy as you board a U.S. flying boat | World at War features the most realistic fire effects ever | The new ability to swim adds to both the story and multiplayer modes | The game is primarily set in the Pacific theatre and has a much more realistic, violent tone requiring less-linear game play than previous Call of Duty installments. You'll struggle to survive Japanese attacks without mastering new gaming skills, like swimming or how to use a flamethrower--a weapon that packs some punch in the fully destructable game world. Also featured is a campaign on the Eastern front, where you take control of a soldier in the Soviet Red Army during the attack on Berlin in the closing stages of the war. The game also includes the series’ first co-op mode, while the competitive multiplayer mode aims to build upon the achievements of Call of Duty 4 and add to the game’s longevity. Key Features - Dual campaigns: Fight in two very different World War II battles. Take on the Japanese Imperial army in the Pacific, and liberate Berlin as part of the Soviet Red Army.
- Grim realities: Experience the most bloody and realistic combat ever seen in the series, as you witness enemy atrocities and wield horrific new weapons such as the flamethrower.
- Job with benefits: Revamped competitive multiplayer mode features useable vehicles and an expanded perks system from Call of Duty 4.
- Brothers in arms: For the first time, a Call of Duty game features a four-player co-operative mode that’s playable online or via a split screen option on the same console.
- Modern graphics: The game uses an enhanced version of the Call of Duty 4 graphics engine, with wood that splinters realistically when shot and fires that spread organically.
About the Developer: Treyarch One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

"COD4 meets World War 2" - 13 October 2008
Having played the Beta version since its release a few weeks ago, I have to say it's fantastic!! Time will tell if it's as good as COD4. As with it's successor COD4, the game is massive on multiplayer that goes back in time to WW2.
The beta version of the game has very similar multiplayer options to COD4 where you still have unlockable perks, upgrade and attachments to your weapons and unlockable weapons. The Beta currently allows you to go to level 44 but it looks like you can go to at least level 65 in the full version.
Prestige is encouraged by allowing a further 5 'Create a class' slots as you prestige making the total of 10 create a class slots at full prestige level 10.
there are 3 maps I've played;
1) Castle - is a close quarter map that is based in what looks to be a ruined Japanese castle both inside and outside. It's pretty small in my opinion but there are lots of different height levels and differences in terrain to make it interesting.
2)Makin - is based in the jungle with round huts on stilts near a river. Just imagine the movie 'Bridge over the river Kwai' - There are lots of places to hide under the huts and is a night based map
3)Roundhouse - is sort of like a ruined train yard and is quite big. There are 2 tanks that 2 players can take control of and try to battle it out against the opponent's tank. Lots of sniping positions here and reminds me a little of Pipeline in COD4 but with a central circular shelter instead of 2 separate shelters.
Teams
There are 4 teams that are playable - Japan, Marine, Red army, Germany. When you play in a game a 'squad' option is available. When activated it puts you in a squad and when viewed on the map, some of your team mates are in blue to signify a different squad. I can see this helping greatly in clan matches where you may be working more in co-ordination with your team mates and also allows you a clear view of where you are in relation to your squad at a glance. A great idea that i'm still exploring. You can create a squad called 'Able' or 'Baker' or even a 3rd one or join a squad of your choice. Alternatively you can be part of the 'Lone Wolves' who run around independently.
Weapons
weapons are sectioned into 5 catagories.
Bolt Action rifles - sniper rifles that are difficult to use without sights. You'll have to die alot to gain enough kills to add a sight to your weapon. The Mossin Nagant is a powerful weapon but you can hear it across the map (comparable to the Barrett)
Rifles - like the Springfield, although I really like M1 Garand with sniper scope and the Gehwert has very little kickback and is an excellent weapon with a sight and is virtually inaudible with the silencer.
Submachine guns - e.g. thompson is available from the start.
Shotguns
Machineguns - e.g. Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) which is nice.
Similar to COD4 as you gain more kills with a gun you unlock weapon attachments, like scopes, equivalent sights to the red dot, silencers and some guns you can fit on bayonets and rifle grenades.
Perks
Similar to COD4, World at War retains the highly successful perks idea. As you rank up, you unlock perks to use. There still is Juggernaught (for the newbs), stopping power, deep impact, Rocket launcher and 3 special grenades, steady aim as well as an equivalent of last stand (Last Chance). Last chance you seem to be in last stand for quite some time and it seems longer than you are alive in COD4. Sleight of hand also makes a return as does martyrdom. Although be careful with the latter, especially in hardcore since a new system has been introduced for those pesky team killers. Basically if you kill your own team member 3 times, you get kicked from the game and can't re-enter the game for about 20 minutes. Great as some people used to rank up by team killing in COD4.
New perks include a perk called 'Revival' where you can revive team mates who have been shot and are in last stand. I could see this being very useful especially in matches where you are with a partner or are in a squad who have last stand. I don't know whether there is a limit to the number of times you can revive team mates and I could see this one getting a little annoying. Neat though!
Another addition to COD4 is that you have vehicle perks!! The beta have up to 5 perks available - one perk allows you to move a turret faster and another perk stops your gun from overheating too quickly and one perk allows you to move at a faster speed.
Grenades range from common frags, flares (similar to flash grenades in COD4) and a new one called the 'Molotov Cocktail' where you light a bottle filled with flammable fluid and lob it at your enemy for longer term burn damage. Neat but it takes a hell of a long time to light and throw compared to a frag.

"Played the Beta" - 14 October 2008
If you like COD4 then you will like this. Graphics are again stunning and surround sound has been improved to make it more realistic. Sound changes more dramatically than in COD4 when running on sand or brick etc.
For me it won't replace COD4 but I will order it and play it along side. Game play feels a little harder but I think that's because the weapons have a realistic feel. Perks are cleverly done so as not to ruin the period feel of the game. There are only 3 maps in the beta so can't wait to so see the full version.

"You cant rate a game that is not out yet!" - 19 September 2008
How can you give a game 1 star 2 months before its release? Amazon needs to remove these reviews or introduce a new page layout that disables the review panel until a product is released.
Until then, i guess we have to rate based on the previous game which is stupid, 5 out of 5 then.

"i must be playing a different game" - 15 October 2008
well i to have played the beta demo of cod 5 and im sorry but i totally disagree,i think the game actually lacks atmosphere and the guns sound terrible one gun simply sounds like a typewriter.yes the graphics are still the best out there, but the game feels very thin hard to explain really, its like the grenades for e.g when a grenade is near you a poor icon comes up and the explosion well its pathetic.same as the artillery srikes just like cod 3 yawn!! poor. i think that if you have ever owned cod 3 you will no it been made by the same people and it feels like cod3 but with new perks and new ideas for getting kill streaks.all in all im not buying this game after playing the demo im goin to stick with the king of ALL games "COD4" infinity ward you rule!!! and please listen to the customer WE HAVE HAD ENUF OF WW2!!!!

"just stop...." - 14 August 2008
Call of Duty 4 is an awesome game, why do they have to ruin their reputation by making another CoD? Can't they just quit while they're ahead? WW2 is really going to get boring and start to piss off people soon and is going to get really old. I only have CoD3 and CoD4. I didnt mind CoD3 when i first played it but i realised how crap it was when i bought CoD4. Now theyre going to chance theyre luck by making ANOTHER World War game???? they cant give us such a treat like call of duty 4 then just take it away by making another crappy WW2 game!

"Be Careful" - 3 July 2008
Yes its going to be the anticipated game for 2009.
Yes Call of Duty 4 is one of the best 360 games, probably the best.
However, World at War is not made by the same people, Treyarch (the makers of Call of Duty 3) are coming back to make this.
Call of Duty 3 was a huge disappointment as a sequel to Call of Duty 2, still one the best games to date. CoD 2 was made by the makers of CoD 4, connection?

"Treyarch does great multiplayer. " - 2 October 2008
Call of duty 3 had a fantastic multiplayer and the people who boo hoo about it probably got frustrated because of their lack of ability. Where else could you find 24 player support on xbox live. The weapons sounded superb which you can't refute because they captured the sound from the real thing.
Gameplay was good with a nice feel to the weapons (german rifle man is best). Cod 4 gameplay is also superb but gets boring real quick as theres no online achievements to keep you interested.
Single player was weak but who cares as you'll be back time and again for the mulitplayer.
Cod 3 was a great game and i'm sure Call of duty world at war will be also. At least people might be interested in the single player for once as you can run through it with four friends. People who moan about Treyarch aren't worth listening to beause at the end of they day you and i both know that they will be buying this game at some point anyway despite all the crying.

"Must be one of the most anticipated games of 2009" - 30 June 2008
Call of duty returns to WWII after the exploit into modern warfare. Using the Game engine of Modern warfare there will be the usual set of Great missions, followed by the excellent multiplayer.
Most exciting about this version is that it at last includes Co-op campaign. 2 on one machine or up to 4 online. An exciting prospect indeed.
After the accolade of Game of the year for the 4th version, most will expect the same brilliant gameplay for World at War. I don't think they will be disappointed.
